AKTU Summer Training & Internship Credits — What Students Actually Need in 2026

Every year we get the same question from B.Tech students in July: "My college is asking for a summer training certificate — what actually counts?"

Here is the current position, and what to do about it.

Rules differ between AKTU-affiliated colleges and autonomous institutions, and departments interpret them differently. Always confirm with your own TPO or HOD before committing to any programme. This guide describes the general framework, not a guarantee for your specific college.

The credit rule in one line

30 hours of internship = 1 academic credit, under the National Credit Framework.

AKTU introduced this for the 2025-26 session onward. Students in semesters 3, 5 and 7 are generally eligible to undertake a minimum of 60 hours, which translates to two credits, and the work is treated as a mini-project in the evaluation scheme.

Evaluation is joint — the industry partner assesses your work, and the university validates it.

What your certificate must contain

This is where most students get caught. A certificate that says "has successfully completed a course in Digital Marketing" is not enough for credit mapping.

You need:

Total contact hours, stated numerically
The project you worked on, named
Start and end dates matching your college calendar
A supervisor evaluation — a signed assessment from whoever oversaw your work
Company letterhead with a registered entity, ideally with CIN or GST visible
A verification method — a QR code or URL the TPO can check

Watch out

Before you pay any institute, ask to see a sample certificate. If it does not state contact hours, it may not be usable for credit mapping — and you will only discover that at submission time, when it is too late.

The free options most students miss

You do not have to pay for this. AKTU has signed MoUs with several organisations for credit-mapped virtual internships, including IBM, Infosys, NIELIT, SmartBridge, Softpro and NEMI. These are offered as paid or unpaid virtual internships, and certificates come from the industry partner.

Separately, the AICTE internship portal (internship.aicte-india.org) lists a large number of free internships across AI, cybersecurity, data science and other domains, with AICTE-recognised digital certificates. Registration is free — AICTE explicitly warns against anyone charging students to access portal listings.

Google's AI-ML virtual internship via EduSkills, and similar programmes, are also free and AICTE-recognised.

Do these. Genuinely. They cost nothing and they satisfy documentation requirements.

So why would anyone pay?

Because a free virtual internship gives you a certificate, and very little else.

What it cannot give you:

A human mentor who reviews your work and tells you why it was wrong
Access to a live client account with real money moving through it
An offline cohort of peers who keep you accountable
An interview at the end

If those things matter to you, a paid programme may be worth it. If you only need the documentation, take the free option and spend your money elsewhere.

The polytechnic and diploma situation

If you are a diploma student, your requirement is heavier. AICTE has made a six-month industrial internship a mandatory, credited component from the 2025-26 academic session, carrying roughly 10 to 14 credits. In BTEUP-pattern diplomas this typically sits in semester 6 and runs to around 600 hours.

That is a substantial commitment, and it means you need an organisation willing to absorb you for six months and document it properly. Start looking early — students who begin in month five of semester 5 have very few options left.

What to do, by year

B.Tech Year 1 (Sem 1–2) — Nothing formally required yet. Use the time to complete free Google and Meta certifications. They are quick and they compound.

B.Tech Year 2 (Sem 3–4) — Your first credit-eligible window. Do a 60-hour internship. Free virtual options are perfectly adequate here. Focus on getting the documentation format right so you know what to expect later.

B.Tech Year 3 (Sem 5–6) — This is the important one. Placement season is roughly a year away. Do something that produces a portfolio artefact, not just a certificate — a live campaign, a real audit, a deployed project. This is what you will actually talk about in interviews.

B.Tech Year 4 (Sem 7–8) — Documentation should already be complete. Spend this time converting your project work into a case study and preparing for interviews.

Polytechnic (Sem 5–6) — Secure your six-month placement early. Confirm the organisation will provide a logbook, supervisor sign-off and a viva-ready report.

The one thing that matters more than credits

Credits get you through your degree. They do not get you hired.

When we interview a final-year student, we are not looking at how many internship certificates they have. We are looking for one project they can explain in detail — what the goal was, what they did, what the numbers were, what went wrong, and what they would do differently.

A student with two credits and one genuine case study beats a student with eight credits and no story every single time.
